2 Attempted child abductions in Parker, AZ

Parker Arizona Police Department

Parker Police Department would like to take the time to remind parents to speak with their children about "Stranger Danger".

Within the past 48 hours there have been two separate unrelated incidents of attempted child abductions. The first incident occurred on October 22nd at approximately 6pm. A male subject driving a dark blue or black sedan similiar to a Chevrolet Lumina, grabbed a young girl by the arm and tried to get her into his vehicle. The male subject is described as dark complected, with wavy hair. The girl was able to get away without further incident.

The second incident occurred on October 23rd between 1pm and 3pm. A young boy was walking home when he was approached by a male subject driving a white van. The subject asked the boy several times if he needed a ride then left after the boy continuously told him he didn't. The male subject is described as white with a dark tan, short dark hair, older than 45 and clean shaven.

Parker PD would like to commend both children for their actions.

Please talk to your children regarding both of these incidents and remind them if they're walking home to walk with a buddy. If they are approached by someone who is trying to lure them into their vehicle, their safety is the main concern. They obviously should not get into a vehicle with someone they do not know.

In the event the unthinkable occurs they need to yell, kick and do anything that will bring attention to them and get to the nearest house for help. If your child rides a bicycle a good idea is for the child to hold onto the bike if someone is physically trying to grab them. It is much more difficult for someone to pull a child into their vehicle while they're holding onto a bicycle. Please contact ANY law enforcement agency to report any child abduction or suspicious contact your child may have with an unknown adult.

If you have any information about the two incidents please call us at 669.2264 or La Paz County Central Dispatch at 669.2281.

ADEQ Announces Free Regional
La Paz County Electronics
Waste Recycling Event for
Saturday, March 10 in Parker

PHOENIX– Arizona Department of Environmental Quality officials announced March 1st that a free regional La Paz County electronics waste recycling event will be held Saturday, March 10 from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. in Parker at the old Dayton Superior building across from La Paz Regional Hospital in the 1200 block of West Mohave Road.

ADEQ and its partners – Colorado River Indian Tribes Environmental Protection Office, Town of Parker, La Paz County, University of Arizona Extension Office and E-Waste Harvesters of Phoenix-- anticipate collecting tons of unwanted televisions, computer equipment, monitors, batteries, chargers, cell phones, VCRs, CD and DVD players, printers, small appliances, fax machines, stereos, cables and cords during the event.

“This is the first event we have done in La Paz County and we welcome all residents of Parker, Quartzsite, Bouse and the surrounding areas to attend,” said ADEQ Director Henry Darwin. “This is a great opportunity for people to dispose of all the unwanted electronics they have collected over the years while at the same time ensuring that this potentially toxic stream of waste is disposed of responsibly and does not take up valuable landfill space.”

Companies and individuals donating e-waste will receive a certificate of disposal for their records from E-Waste Harvesters if they want the document. E-Waste Harvesters will erase all hard drives with state of the art software and recycles all materials in accordance with state and federal regulations.

ADEQ has sponsored 52 e-recycling events throughout the state since August 2009 and collected more than 1.3 million pounds of recyclable material from more than 10,000 vehicles attending.

Flu Vaccine for Parker, Bouse, Salome, Ehrenberg dates

FLU VACCINE CLINICS SET

La Paz County, AZ- The dates are set for the first La Paz County adult flu clinics and the La Paz County Health Department has plenty of vaccine. The influenza vaccine will be provided at

Parker High School on September 21st from 4-6pm; Bouse Booster Club on September 27th from 11:30-12:30pm; and at McMullen Fire Department in Salome on October 3rd from 2-3pm; Ehrenburg Fire Department October 5th from 9:30-11:30am. Clinics for Quartzsite will be scheduled at a later date. Children’s flu clinics will be conducted in conjunction with the area schools.

A ten dollar donation for the influenza vaccine is appreciated for the adult vaccine. There is very little wait time with the Health Department influenza vaccine clinics. The Health Department does not bill Medicare for the vaccine so the lines move quickly.

Each flu season is unique, but Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that, on average, approximately 5% to 20% of U.S. residents get the flu. Even though influenza is a common illness, it can have serious complications. Some of the complications caused by flu include bacterial pneumonia, dehydration, and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes. Children may get sinus problems and ear infections as complications from the flu. Those aged 65 years and older and persons of any age with chronic medical conditions are at highest risk for serious complications of flu. More than 200,000 persons are hospitalized for flu-related complications each year. About 36,000 Americans die on average per year from the complications of flu.

Parker Pioneer posts history of Quartzsite politics article

John Gutekunst, a journalist for the Parker Pioneer of Parker, AZ, wrote about the long history of how things got to be  as they are now in Quartzsite. Thank you John, for putting things into perspective. The link to his article is below.

Parker, Arizona is located about 35 miles just up the road from Quartzsite on State Route 95. The Parker Pioneer is the only official newspaper in La Paz County. (Free papers are not recognized by the state as official newspapers. Qualifications require certain percentages to be paid subscriptions, rack sales, and a myriad of other requirements, etc.)

Hwy. 72 & 95 construction extends into weekend

SR 95 and SR 72 shoulder paving schedule
extends into weekend

Paving is scheduled from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is currently in the process of paving the newly widened shoulders along State Route 95 & State Route 72. Crews are paving all day today and tomorrow as scheduled, however, an additional two days of paving will also take place this Saturday (June 3) and Sunday (June 4).

Paving hours will be from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. During those hours, one lane of the roadway will be closed while crews pave the shoulders in two-mile increments. Additional work will continue alongside the shoulders from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Drivers should allow extra travel time as they will be stopped temporarily while vehicles pass through the work zone in alternating directions.

Message boards will be displayed to inform drivers of the restrictions. Law enforcement will be on site to control traffic and monitor the reduced speed limit of 35 mph through the work zone.

When the project is complete, an eight-mile stretch of SR 95 and a one-mile stretch of SR 72 will have new eight-foot wide paved shoulders that will provide an extra margin of safety for motorists.

The project is scheduled for completion by July 2011.

ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule. To stay up-to-date with the latest highway conditions around the state, visit the ADOT Traveler Information Center at www.az511.gov or call 5-1-1.
