Quartzsite- This morning at 10am the Arizona Centennial Committee of Quartzsite held their first ever Event Calendar Planning Meeting. Members of many local organizations were in attendance as well as business owners, and individuals.
Chair Person, Shanana Rain Golden-Bear announced that the committee has worked all summer on this project, sometimes up to 10 hours a week. Events are being planned throughout the centennial year, beginning February 12, 2011 through February 14, 2012. Some of the publicity already in place are Twitter accounts, a Facebook page, a blog.
Education Coordinator, Mary Huntley, displayed the first of many paintings to be displayed during the year. The 3.5' x 4' art pieces will be added each month during the year, displayed on Main Street, on the railings across from McDonald's, etc. Folks will be able to participate in a contest all year long. There will be questions about the scene depicted in the art, what business they are located near, what unique items are in that business, etc. This should increase awareness of our local businesses along with educating folks about the surrounding areas.
Events Coordinator, Monica Timberlake spoke explaining the many new events being planned, as well as asking organizations to incorporate the Centennial theme into their existing events. She explained how important it is for the community to work together.
Lasting Legacy Chair Audrey Berger shared how much she wants everyone to get involved in the events.
Vice Chair Michelle Lukkasson, and Fundraising Coordinator, explained the many fundraising opportunites for businesses and individuals. The attendees were informed that there are no public funds available, none from the state level, county, or town levels. Lukkasson explained the deadline schedule for submissions for the Lasting Legacy Project.
Attendees were given a packet containing the yearly calendar, a detailed calendar, and Lasting Legacy submission information.
After the presentations, the floor was opened for discussion. Many great ideas were shared and some suggestions were given, adding to the calendar. Organizations can email their calendar events to Monica Timberlake at mtimberlake73@gmail.com by October 21.
If folks missed the meeting, don't worry! There is an evening meeting planned in cooperation with the Quartzsite Business Chamber of Commerce on Monday, Oct. 25th at 7pm to be held at the QIA.
Please bring your calendars and ideas!
