ADOT holds open house in Quartzsite tonight on I-10 project

Community invited to attend open house to learn about I-10  Multimodal Corridor Profile Study The Arizona Department of Transportation is conducting the I-10 Multimodal Corridor Profile Study, a long-range planning study for Interstate 10. The primary purpose of the study is to develop a long-range transportation plan for the busy corridor. The study will consider a range of mobility options including vehicle, rail, transit, and air service in the study area. The study area for this project extends from downtown Phoenix (Central Avenue) to the state line. ADOT is hosting an open house to provide an opportunity for La Paz County residents to learn more about the study, review and comment on future transportation needs. Quartzsite Interim Town Manager terminates Town Attorney contract

In a letter dated October 30, 2012 Quartzsite Interim Town Manager Laura Bruno terminated Town Attorney Martin Brannan's contract "for Cause". Bruno claims Brannan committed a Material Breach of the contract including
* Violation of AZ Rules of Professional Conduct for Attorneys by allegedly Giving advice to council members regarding personnel matters and then initiated legal action when they failed to follow his advise;
* Material Misrepresentation to Quartzsite Town Council and Violation of Town Procurement Code by  claiming he was authorized by council to hire investigative firm regarding voter fraud, without approval of the council.
* Brannan repeatedly requested notice of constructive discharge (when an employee believes working conditions may have become intolerable) from then Acting Town Manager Teri Frausto
* Brannan abandoned his position by packing up belongings;
* Intimidation of Acting Town Manager and Coercion;
* Acting in violation of his duties of loyalty.

According to the letter, Bruno has set an appointment with  Brannan on Friday, Nov. 9th to discuss the reasons for termination.

Natural disasters often result in predatory consumer scams popping up nationwide, and Arizona consumers need to be alert to those potential schemes, Attorney General Tom Horne said today.

“One of the more unfortunate consequences of natural disasters such as Hurricane Sandy is that scammers make their move in an effort to defraud consumers,” Horne said. “Generosity runs deep among Americans and when a crisis hits, even one that’s more than 2000 miles away, Arizonans have a great tradition of responding. Therefore, I am cautioning all Arizonans that when they give to a relief agency, they make sure they are giving to an established and responsible organization.”

Here are some consumer tips for charitable giving:

• To help victims, consider donating to nationally known and legitimate charities, like the Red Cross, rather than charities that you may not recognize. The IRS says that swindlers may attempt to use the destruction Sandy left behind in order to trick people into donating money to bogus sites that appear to be charities.
• Don’t judge a charity by its name. False charities may use names that closely resemble legitimate charities.
• Don’t let callers play on your sympathy by identifying their organization with the specific disaster. This can be a tactic to get your money.
• Don’t be pressured. Give only when you are comfortable with the charity.
• Avoid cash donations and make checks payable to the organization, not to an individual.
• Internet scams may emerge on social media and through unsolicited emails.
• After natural disasters, schemers often use fake videos, URLs or other schemes designed to commit identity or financial theft.
• Be cautious of Facebook postings, tweets, emails and websites claiming to have exclusive video or pleading for donations for disaster relief efforts. The postings often include malicious code that attempts to infect computers with viruses, spyware or Trojan horses.

Veteran's Day Weekend Fee Free at BLM recreation sites

BLM Announces “Fee-Free” Weekend at Recreation Sites

Lake Havasu City, Ariz. – To celebrate Veterans Day, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Colorado River District will be waiving entrance fees to local recreation sites.  The fee-free designation applies to Veterans Day holiday weekend, November 10 - 12, 2012.

“These fee-free days will provide a great opportunity to visit a new area and explore the wonder of your public lands,” stated District Manager Roxie Trost.  “This is also a great way to help some folks, who might otherwise not have the opportunity, to experience their public lands and develop a passion for them as others have.”

Recreation areas in the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Colorado River District that will be free include the following sites.

Yuma Field Office – Squaw Lake Campground and Boat Launch, Senator Wash Boat Ramp and Day-Use Area, Senator Wash North Shore Campground, Senator Wash South Shore Campground, Oxbow Recreation and Wildlife Area, and Ehrenberg Sandbowl Off-Highway Vehicle Area

Kingman Field Office – Burro Creek, Wild Cow Springs, and Windy Point Recreation Sites

Lake Havasu Field Office – Crossroads and Empire Landing Campgrounds, Bullfrog Day-Use Area, and the 87 Lake Havasu Campsites

Site standard amenity and individual day-use fees at BLM recreation sites and areas will be waived.  Other fees, such as overnight camping, concession fees, and group day-use will remain in effect.

**Just a reminder that Betty’s Kitchen Watchable Wildlife Area just north of Yuma, Arizona, continues to be closed due to the Laguna Fire that burned through the area in May 2011.
